S’Court Judges Now 16 as Ogunbiyi Retires

The number of the Justices of the Supreme Court will on February 27 2018 drop from 17 to 16 as the eighth most senior Justice of the apex court Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, will attain the mandatory retirement age of 70 on the said date.

Her profile displayed on the Supreme Court’s website as of 5.30pm on Tuesday showed she was born on February 27, 1948.

A statement by the Director of Information of the Supreme Court, Mr. Festus Akande, on Tuesday stated that a valedictory court session would be held in her honour on February 27.

It stated, “The valedictory court session to mark the formal retirement of Hon. Mrs. Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi from the Supreme Court bench at the attainment of the mandatory age of 70 years will take place on Tuesday, 27th February, 2018 at the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court at 10.00am.

“The programme, which precedes other events, is to be presided over by the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, GCON.

“Also as part of the chain of events lined up to complement this unique occasion is a book presentation slated for Saturday, 3rd March, 2018 at the Nigerian Airforce Conference Centre, Jahi District, Abuja at 10.00am.

“The book titled, ‘Honey from the Rock’, a biography of the retiring Hon. Justice, is to be presented by a former Chief of Army Staff/Minister of Defence, General T. Y. Danjuma, GCON (retd).

“Similarly, a former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, GCFR (retd) will be the chairman on the occasion, while His Excellency, Kashim Shettima, the governor of Borno State will be the chief host.”

Her profile on the Supreme Court’s website indicated that she was appointed a justice of the Court of Appeal in October, 2002 and served in various divisions of the court until 2012.

During that period, she also served as the presiding justice of the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, Lagos and Jos at various times.

She was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in July 2012.

Ogunbiyi became a bencher in 2009 and was appointed a life bencher on March 31, 2017.
